158 veterinary practices across Queensland are offering 20% off cat and dog desexing as part of RSPCA Queensland's campaign, Operation Wanted.

Until August 31, pet owners can register to receive the discount by visiting Operation Wanted.

Having unexpected litter can be time consuming and costly. In this financial year, RSPCA Queensland has seen over 4,000 pets surrendered with financial hardship as the top reason for surrender.

The RSPCA recommends preventing unplanned pregnancies by desexing, rather than bringing unwanted pets into the world.

"The discounted service in multiple regions will not only help save lives, it will also help pet owners save costs," said RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Emma Lagoon.

Every year, it's estimated around 20,000 animals are desexed in Queensland during the three-month campaign.

"Right now, we are full to the brim with cats and kittens. Unexpected litters and unwanted pets coming into our shelters is at an all-time high. Every animal deserves to be loved and have a home to call their own, desexing helps," says Ms Lagoon.

What are the benefits of desexing your cat or dog?

  • No risk of unwanted litters
  • Reduces their desire to roam
  • Reduces the risk of some cancers
  • Reduces other unwanted behaviours such as urine spraying (cats)
  • Cheaper Council registration fees
  • Allows pets to be happier and more relaxed
