After 32 years on the Sunshine Coast, RSPCA Noosa will relinquish its lease of the Noosa Council facilities on May 31, 2025.

Transforming the lives of more than 33,000 animals since 1993 (with these figures only representing data since records were digitised in 2002) through both the Noosa Council contract and delivering support for RSPCA animals throughout Queensland, RSPCA’s passionate staff and volunteers have positively impacted responsible pet ownership in the region over the past three decades.

The RSPCA animal pound contract with council will end without renewal following a significant decline in the number of animals in need, with the RSPCA receiving very few new impounded animals through its doors each month.

10 years ago an average 26 impounded animals were coming through the doors at Noosa each month, 10 years later that has declined to an average 4 per month, that's an 85% decrease in demand and a real win for animal welfare in the Noosa community.

RSPCA Queensland interim CEO Kylie Sprott says, “Having so few roaming animals in the region is a great reflection of the animal welfare improvements that have been made in the region with our Council partnership since 1993.”

The Noosa RSPCA team has effectively helped hundreds of animals every year across Queensland through adoption, fostering, education, and assisting other RSPCA locations with animal capacity, including their Inspectorate services in the area.

“Our joint education efforts with Council across the years have meant more animals are staying in their forever homes and we have a region of more responsible pet owners. Which is something Noosa residents can be proud of.

“We congratulate the local community for taking such good care of their pets and thank the numerous dedicated RSPCA Queensland staff and volunteers who have run the local pound service over the past three decades,” says Ms Sprott.

Noosa Council is exploring alternative animal impoundment options and will work closely with RSPCA Queensland to ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements.

RSPCA Queensland will relinquish its lease of the Council site at Noosaville at the end of May.

“Council thanks RSPCA Queensland for its enduring commitment to the Noosa community and we are pleased to continue working together to keep promoting responsible pet ownership,” says Richard MacGillivray, Noosa Council’s Director of Development and Regulation.

“Noosa Council looks forward to announcing new arrangements for the management of lost and impounded animals in the very near future.”

Transforming people and pets’ lives in Noosa

Since 2002 (since records have been digitised), RSPCA Noosa has delivered the following impacts that are a combination of impounded council animals and RSPCA animals from across the State that the Noosa facility has provided care for:

  • Received 33,039 incoming animals,
  • Adopted 17,216 animals,
  • Placed 9,684 animals in care from other RSPCA locations and,
  • Helped reunite 4,326 lost animals

Over the past three decades, the Noosa RSPCA team actively held fundraising events in the region to support animals in care, raising an incredible $53,335 since 2020 from donation boxes, shelter donations, shelter fundraising activities, garage sales, raffles, and more.

Since 2020, RSPCA Cupcake Day and Million Paws Walk supporters raised $31,814 and $38,236 in donations respectively. RSPCA Noosa ranked in the top three Cupcake Day national fundraisers for five consecutive years.

Despite the closure of the Noosa facility, RSPCA Queensland remains committed to protecting animals in the region. The RSPCA Inspectorate will continue to investigate cruelty complaints and support at-risk animals in Noosa and surrounding areas, ensuring ongoing education and intervention for those in need.

The local community can still make a lasting impact by supporting RSPCA Queensland’s vital work in the region, helping to fund proactive animal welfare initiatives, cruelty response, and community education efforts that prevent neglect and mistreatment before it occurs.

Sunshine Coast residents can support the RSPCA by walking and fundraising at the final Million Paws Walk on Sunday 25 May.
