On Thursday 17th July, the RSPCA Animal Rescue Team responded to an urgent call for assistance by a member of the public in Holland Park.

A poor brushtail possum had his leg caught by a nasty steel jaw trap and was hanging from a tree. The possum was in immense pain and distress.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (264 625) or by reporting online.

These archaic steel jaw traps don’t discriminate. They cause horrific injuries to wildlife, pets and target animals.

Steel jaw traps are banned in most Australian states, but not in Queensland.

RSPCA Queensland is calling on the state government for a complete ban on the sale and use of steel jaw traps.

Currently, under the Animal Care and Protection Act (2001), anyone who uses a trap must ensure it does not cause unreasonable injury or suffering to an animal.

Sadly, this brushtail possum suffered significant leg injuries from being caught in this trap and was unable to be saved.

RSPCA Queensland Wildlife Vet Martine said, “It would have been suffering terribly for an unknown period of time. If the possum had not been found, he would have died a slow and painful death.

“Our vets, nurses, rescue team, and volunteers were all shocked and saddened by what had happened to this poor possum. Wildlife should not have to suffer like this."
