Rapid population growth, habitat loss and disease are threatening Australia’s iconic native wildlife.
RSPCA is home to Australia's busiest wildlife hospital, providing care to over 23,000 sick, injured and orphaned native animals every year.
The demands on our Brisbane based 24-hour Wildlife Hospital are ever increasing and have now exceeded its capacity to care by almost 200%.
Built to cater for just 5,000 wildlife patients, in its first year of operation in 2012 a total of 8,359 patients were cared for. Over a decade later, our same facility takes in more than 23,000 native animals per year for medical treatment and rehabilitation. This exponential growth has created an urgent need to build a new, expanded facility, the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital and Centre of Excellence.
A better future for wildlife
In planning for the new facility and selecting a land location, it was important to consider not only the animal welfare hotspots, reducing time in travel and enabling faster, more effective triage and support, it was also important to reduce the impact to land, avoiding any clearing of healthy habitat that is often required in developments.
The Redlands IndigiScapes precinct in Capalaba offers up the perfect location. Working in with the natural landscape, the new RSPCA building design leans into the natural landscape to deliver appropriate low-stress rehabilitation environments and educational spaces without the need for land clearing.
This state-of-the-art facility will offer more than the triage, treatment and rehabilitation work of a wildlife hospital. Leveraging international best practices and cutting-edge technology, the additional wildlife education and research spaces on site transform the facility into a Centre of Excellence supporting the future of wildlife for decades to come.
Bringing the Centre of Excellence to life
A transformational project of this size requires an investment of more than $25 million to become a reality. Three passionate and committed RSPCA Queensland supporters have already pledged generous philanthropic gifts toward our new Wildlife Hospital build, contributing just over $2.55 million, along with a $5 million grant from the Australian Government under the Saving the Koalas Fund.
You can help build a centre that can support proactive wildlife care through education, training and research, as well as emergency care.
