WHAT TO DO WHEN THERE IS A WEATHER WARNING IN YOUR AREA

Keep up to date with weather warnings in your area on the Bureau of Meteorology website. Visit www.bom.gov.au. For public safety warnings in your area visit your local Council website.

TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR PETS ARE SAFE

  • Create a safe and secure space for all of your animals
  • Don’t tether pets if outside - they may do themselves more harm trying to break free
  • Provide access to water and food in heavy bowls if outdoors
  • Keep your cats indoors
  • Take time to prepare a Disaster Pet Preparedness Plan for you and your pet if you need to evacuate
  • Ensure objects in your yard are tied down

WATCH FOR WILDLIFE

Call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) to report any sick or injured animals in need of assistance.
  • If you see a koala in your suburb, let RSPCA know. It is valuable data collected to monitor the wellbeing of our native animals. Call 1300 ANIMAL (264 625) with GPS location and ask for it to be logged as a sighting.
  • If you come across any sick or injured wildlife. If it is safe you can collect them and take them to your closest vet or call 1300 ANIMAL (264 625) 24/7 RSPCA Animal Emergency Hotline.
  • Leave water containers out for Wildlife and pack a pillowcase, box and towels in your car when travelling.

HOW TO CARE FOR ANIMALS WHEN RETURNING HOME

During flood and heavy rainfall, animals may become displaced or lost when homes, sheds and fences are damaged or destroyed. Lost animals should be returned to their home property or correct ownership as soon as possible and appropriate care and treatment for any disease or injury provided.

Here are some simple steps to follow for animals in natural disasters - remember if it's flooded, forget it:

  • Make sure your animals have clean water and food.
  • Be careful when handling animals, as they may be frightened or disoriented.
  • Be aware of straying stock and wildlife, and be careful on the roads.
  • Please avoid flood waters and be wary, crocodiles and snakes could turn up in unexpected places where there has been flooding.
  • Contact your local veterinarian regarding sick or injured animals or the RSPCA 24/7 Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) regarding injured wildlife.
  • If you have lost or found an animal notify your local Council in the first instance and contact RSPCA Queensland Lost & Found team on 1300 363 736.
  • For all other matters, contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

ENSURE YOUR PET HAS IDENTIFICATION

If your pet becomes lost in a storm, having appropriate ID can help them be reunited safely. Is your pet microchipped and has a collar with ID?
