Volunteers like Misty play a crucial role in our day-to-day operations, especially in our regional centres where we are occasionally the only animal welfare contact point for people.
For 9 years Misty, who is in her early 30’s, has devoted her time to us as a volunteer Animal Care Assistant at our Bundaberg shelter, working with dogs but quickly adjusting to help in several different areas.
Misty, an avid traveller and gamer, loves animals, so the fact she gets to spend a lot of time with them makes her happy. She says the most fulfilling part of her job is also the bittersweet part of it all when animals find their forever homes.
“Creating special bonds, seeing them go through all of their highs and lows, overcoming obstacles, getting them to the place they need to be in order to be adoption ready, ultimately finding them suitable adoptees, is like no other feeling,” says Misty.
Misty says that there is no better feeling than being able to volunteer as part of a devoted team, with many reasons as to why people should sign up.
“It can benefit your mental and physical wellbeing by giving back to the community in a positive way. It is a fantastic way to build self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth,” says Misty.
When asked what she would like to see happen in the Bundaberg region in the future, Misty gave an answer centered around her passion for animal welfare.
“I would love to see a complete revamp of the RSPCA Bundaberg Centre. All onsite facilities would benefit from a complete overhaul with a focus on adoption layout improvements. Investment into the boarding facility would also help the greater community,” says Misty.

Sadly, since the Covid-19 pandemic we have lost 16% of our volunteer workforce since the pandemic. Some of our shelters and op shops have seen volunteer interest drop to an all-time low. That means we have numerous volunteer positions which urgently need to be filled across the state. They are as follows:

- Animal Rescue drivers in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Townsville
