Heart health for you and your pet

Pets Pet Health RSPCA Health Products Posted Dec 1, 2020
This Valentine’s Day, put your health first and your pets’ too! Pet owners already have many health benefits…
Research shows that owning a pet can actually impact on our physical health in a positive way. Including:
  • Improved cardiovascular health (lower cholesterol in men, lower blood pressure and lower triglycerides).
  • Increased physical activity. Having a dog can get us out and about and enjoying regular exercise.
  • Less visits to your doctor.
  • Strengthened immunity. Children that grow up around a dog (and some other pets too) may have a better immune system with a reduced risk of developing allergies!

Pet ownership also goes hand in hand with psychological benefits, according to research:

  • A study of school children showed that those with pets were more empathetic.
  • Pet owners, including children, have also been shown to have higher self-esteem. So if you have a moody teenager, perhaps owning a pet could help? Those with pets report less loneliness, restlessness, despair and boredom with an overall more positive outlook on life.
  • If you have a pet, chances are you will report less depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loss better than non-pet owners.
  • Our pets are conversation starters! They help us connect with others around us and improve social skills.
  • If you’ve ever found comfort when feeling down or sick, that might be thanks to your loyal companion! Pets can help people feel safe and secure.

Pets give us SO much. Take a moment to ensure you’re giving your pet the very best too.

Is your pet up to date with their vaccinations and worming? Book in a trip to your local vet and top up on your pet’s vet lines at RSPCA World for Pets.

What is Heartworm?

Heartworm is a parasitic worm that infects both dogs and cats. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mozzies are out in force and prevention is FAR better than a cure for our furry friends. Learn more about heartworm here from Greencross Vets.
