Pet Care Animals Cats Dogs Pets Pet Health Posted Aug 9, 2024
Is there a fantastic feline in your life? This is your chance to celebrate.

It is that time of year again to ‘paws’ and reflect on the wonderful impact our purr-fect partners make on our lives.

International Cat Day is a special occasion used to raise awareness for cats and learn ways to help and protect them.

Owning a cat brings immense joy and companionship into our lives. Their playful nature and affectionate temperaments have a unique way of brightening every day.

Let's explore some tips to make this International Cat Day a safe and memorable one for your furbaby.

How to care for our cuddly companions
  1. Indoor enrichment for cats
Create a stimulating environment indoors with toys, scratching posts and cozy spots for your cat to relax. Indoor cats are less exposed to dangers like traffic and diseases. If you are looking for an easy, cheap, and exciting boredom buster for your cat, you cannot go past these DIY cat wands.

  2. Microchipping and ID tags
Ensure your cat has a collar with an ID tag and is microchipped. This simple step can help reunite you with your kitty in case they wander off.

  3. Nutritious diet for your cat
A well-balanced diet is essential for your cat’s health and happiness. Consult your vet for the best food options for your feline friend. Once you pick the right one, our RSPCA World for Pets website can help you with quality food at great prices!

  4. Regular veterinary cat health checks
Keep your cat healthy by scheduling regular check-ups with the vet. Prevention is key to avoiding health issues such as feline panleukopenia virus or ringworm.

  5. Don’t let your cat roam
You can still consider a safe outdoor escape-proof enclosure for your feline, or a cat-fenced garden. Need some advice on how to transition an outdoor cat to an indoor one? Read more on our website.

RSPCA Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Anne Chester said it was important we keep our feline friends safe and happy.

“You can do so by providing a loving environment and enriching indoor activities while regularly having them checked by your local vet. Remember, a healthy cat is a happy cat,” Dr Chester said.

Crack the cat behavior code

When it comes to understanding and appreciating your cat, there are many behaviour tips  you can use to make a difference.

First, pay attention to your cat’s body language. Their tail, ears and eyes can give you clues about how they feel. Your will be able to determine your approach once you have studied their body language.

Additionally, engaging your cat in regular play is also an important step. It will ensure they are mentally and physically stimulated, therefore, improving their overall temperament and behaviour.

We cannot understate the importance of a good scratching post. They help to satisfy your cat’s natural urge to scratch and keeps their claws healthy at the same time. It is a win-win!

One thing your cat thrives on is routine. Try to feed them, play with them, and clean their litter box at consistent times.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, cats appreciate their personal space. By respecting their boundaries and letting them come to you for attention, you are strengthening the bond between cat and owner.
