RSPCA Rescue Officer Amy was called out to a home in Robina after the home owners could hear a possum scratching on the inside of one of their indoor decorative PVC poles. The home owner’s husband was a builder, so Amy waited for him to arrive with some power tools as she knew this rescue was going to be intricate and strategic.
Once he was home, he drilled a hole into the pole so Amy could stick the inspection camera in to observe what the possum was currently doing and its condition. What Amy could see, was the possum lying on the floor of the pole breathing very heavily.
A hole was then sawed large enough for Amy to grab the possum. Upon his removal, Amy noticed that he barely reacted to being moved and was covered in urine and faeces; an indication that he had been in there for quite a while.
Due to his critical condition, Amy transported the possum straight to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital to be assessed and treated.
Amy recently followed up with the team at Currumbin. Luckily, this little possum pulled through from his ordeal and is now recovering with a wildlife rehabilitator until he’s well enough to be released back into the wild.
We couldn’t be happier that Mr. Possum is receiving the help he so desperately needs.
