RSPCA Qld Inspectors have charged two men who deliberately ran over a possum with a car wheel and then laughed as it crawled off with its entrails hanging out. They filmed the torture and posted it on Snapchat.
Callum Gibson Mckenzie (17) from Greenslopes and Hunter Lawrence Jonasen (17) from Tarragindi have been charged with serious animal cruelty. The charge of serious animal cruelty carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.
“We would like to thank the public for its assistance in tracking down the alleged offenders,” said RSPCA Qld CEO Mark Townend. “What was shown on the Snapchat post was quite abhorrent. This was not a drunken brain snap. This was the deliberate torture of a defenseless animal and disturbingly the young men appeared to find it funny. We were swamped with emails and phone calls from people who were justifiably outraged.”
RSPCA Qld is also asking anyone who has information on the shooting of a kangaroo with an arrow in Greenbank to come forward. The RSPCA ambulance discovered the young female off Andrews Road.
“It appears she had been living with the injury for a while and would have been in agony. She died and her two week old fetus is also deceased.”
