Saved from starvation

Can you believe that this is the same dog? It’s hard to comprehend how owners can let pets get into such a terrible state!

Freddie was found wandering the streets of Brisbane’s north side in 31 degree heat by a concerned member of the public who contacted the RSPCA to assist. Freddie was quickly collected by our Animal Ambulance team who transported him to Wacol.

RSPCA veterinary staff determined he was emaciated, infested with fleas and hookworm, and weighed a measly 12 kilos! He was placed on a feeding plan and administered routine treatments.

After many months of care, Freddie reached his goal weight, closer to 30 kilos.

Freddie is a happy-go-lucky Staffy who has won the hearts of all who know him. Sadly, Freddie isn’t the first, nor will he be the last emaciated dog that the RSPCA treats.

Freddie’s previous owner was located and was charged with four offences related to failing to provide appropriate food and veterinary treatment to an animal. The prosecution outcome resulted in a conviction not recorded and 12 months to pay:

• $1,800 fine (50% moiety)
• $101.80 court costs
• $1,066.72 vet costs
• $229.00 boarding
• $500 professional costs
• PO - 2 years

Luna was seized from a property on Brisbane’s north side on Wednesday 25th June by an RSPCA Inspector. Similar to Freddie, Luna has a long road to recovery ahead of her.

Luna is currently under vet care and her previous owner has been charged with three offences related to failing to provide appropriate food and veterinary treatment to an animal.

And just when you think, surely there isn’t another case like this around the corner, Ava was found in Toowoomba in terrible condition on Friday 28^th June. Ava was so malnourished that she couldn’t stand or walk and if our Inspectors hadn’t been alerted to her condition, it’s likely she wouldn’t have lasted another day.

Ava was hospitalised and our veterinarians are hopeful that she will make a full recovery.

The investigation surrounding Ava’s condition is ongoing, with Inspectors likely to commence proceedings against those responsible in the coming weeks.  

It’s disheartening to think that any human can let an animal reach the point of starvation.
